How we’re translating BaZi’s terminology into plain English — a 5-energy, 20-pattern framework

The Ten Gods (十神) are not ten supernatural beings. They are ten relational categories derived from how other elements in a BaZi chart relate to the Day Master. The difficulty is that their familiar English names often sound like predictions, moral judgments, or fixed personality labels.

Our approach is to preserve the traditional Ten Gods underneath the calculation, explain them through five functional energy families, and map recurring relationships among those families into 20 named patterns. This is not a replacement for BaZi. It is an English interpretation layer designed to make the structure easier to discuss without flattening it.

Why literal Ten Gods translations can mislead English readers

Terms such as “Wealth,” “Officer,” “Seven Killings,” “Eating God,” and “Rob Wealth” carry strong everyday meanings in English. A new reader can easily mistake them for promises about money, career status, violence, appetite, or loss.

In BaZi, however, these labels describe relationships to the Day Master. 财 can involve resources, value, responsibility, and engagement with the external world; 官杀 can involve structure, pressure, authority, and discipline. Reducing either family to one literal noun hides more than it explains.

We therefore use functional English labels at the first reading layer while keeping the original Chinese categories visible. This lowers the language barrier without erasing the distinctions between the two Ten Gods inside each family.

The five energy families

Traditional BaZi already pairs the Ten Gods into five functional families. We did not invent that grouping. Our work is the plain-English semantic layer and the way those families are presented as an interaction system.

Each family is a first-level map. The paired Ten Gods remain distinct at the deeper level; grouping them does not mean they calculate or express identically.

How five energies become 20 interaction patterns

A static list of ten labels does not show how a chart moves. In our framework, we read the five families through four relationship modes. Each mode contributes five recurring configurations, producing a 5 × 4 map of 20 patterns.

The generating and controlling logic comes from BaZi. The English names and this particular 20-pattern map are our interpretive framework. They are not a claim that the 20 names are classical terms or that they replace every traditional 格局 school.

These are not 20 fixed personality types

A BaZi chart can contain several patterns. Most people have one to three more prominent patterns and additional secondary patterns; different life phases can make some relationships louder while others recede.

A pattern describes a recurring energy flow, not a verdict about character or destiny. Full-chart interpretation still needs context such as season, strength, hidden stems, combinations, clashes, and the relationships among the whole structure.

Where calculation ends and interpretation begins

We treat BaZi as a framework for self-reflection, not scientific proof or deterministic prediction. The English layer supports clearer questions and choices—it does not turn a symbolic system into a diagnosis.
